Why Excelsior?

Academic Achievement

Academic Achievement

The Eureka schools have historically been statewide leaders in student performance. Our students continue to eclipse Federal and State academic achievement targets.

Excelsior School has been recognized as a California Gold Ribbon School for our Challenge 21 program. The Challenge 21 program components of life and character skills, communication and collaboration skills, information, media and technology skills, and creativity and innovation skills are infused into the daily curriculum at Excelsior School.

Small Class Sizes and Quality Instruction

Small Class Sizes and Quality Instruction

Our school class sizes are among the lowest in the region, which allows our teachers to provide challenging and engaging lessons while closely monitoring and supporting student progress. Our rigorous curriculum, quality instruction, and caring teachers create an academically challenging program for all students. The core of Excelsior’s success rests with attention to preparing our students for study at junior high, high school, and then university-level programs. Our teachers actively participate in professional development, always striving to be the best in their field.

Enrichment Opportunities

Enrichment Opportunities

The Eureka Union School District offers engaging programs and enrichment opportunities. At Excelsior, these offerings typically include:
  • Beginning and Advanced Band (for 4th and 5th grade students)
  • Choir and Choraliers
  • Drama Club
  • World Language Classes
  • Running Club
  • Many other enrichment programs through STAR
Innovation / Technology

Innovation / Technology

Engaging students in active learning involves the basics and beyond. Our 21st Century classrooms feature interactive whiteboards, voice enhancement systems, and student Chromebooks to provide access to a high-tech world of information. Innovation can be found in students propagating seeds and planting a garden, planning a tour of historical sites across the U.S., and producing a video to teach others about sources of energy. Our students are preparing for the future and global environment in which they will live and work—today!

Community and Parent Support

Community and Parent Support

Our district motto, “Working together for excellence” emphasizes our focus on creating a shared partnership among our students, teachers, parents, and broader community. The Excelsior School Site Council is made up of parents and staff dedicated to school improvement. The Eureka Schools Foundation generously gives each year to support classroom technology, staff, and enrichment programs. And our Excelsior Parent Teacher Club encourages local involvement and school community support. Additional opportunities for our supportive parents to volunteer at school and in classrooms also provide enhancements for our students.
